A serial number must be assigned to each serial-tracked item. This number aids in tracking revisions of an item. You cannot add serial master records on this Serial Numbers form. On forms where you perform an inventory transaction, you can assign serial numbers for serialized inventory in a Serial Numbers tab or area. Serial numbers can be unique per site or per item.
For example, an item 'ABC' is issued a serial number '1' at Site A. You transfer item ABC from Site A to Site B. If the serial number has not been used at the receiving site, then it remains the same in the new site. If the receiving site has already used the serial number for the item, then a new serial number is assigned.

The Location and Lot associated with a specific serial number are stored in the Serial table. When a serial number is shipped, the Location is set to blank. On-hand inventory with serial numbers is not allowed to go negative.

Serial numbers can be preassigned, or they can be assigned when the serial numbers are generated and the item is received into inventory. The preassigned serial number does not have to be used at the time of receipt. If you decide to use a different serial number, then the preassigned serial number goes back into the available pool of serial numbers when the order is closed. No unit of measure is recorded, since a serial number is unique to each item.
